About
I am a historian and journalist, a staff writer for the Atlantic and a Senior Fellow at the Agora Institute, Johns Hopkins University. My history books include GULAG: A HISTORY, which won the Pulitzer prize in 2004; IRON CURTAIN, which describe the Sovietization of Eastern Europe after WW2; and RED FAMINE which describes the Ukrainian famine of 1932-33, one of the important antecedents of the current war in Ukraine. TWILIGHT OF DEMOCRACY, an essay published in 2020, sought to explain the attraction of authoritarianism to Western intellectuals (including some of my former acquaintances). My new book, AUTOCRACY, INC, about the ways in which modern dictatorships work together, will be published in July. I have been a working journalist since 1989, when I covered about the fall of communism in Poland for the Economist magazine. Since then, I've written about US, UK, and European politics, for both British and American media, including more than 15 years as a columnist for the Washington Post and a stint as the deputy editor of the Spectator magazine in London. Please note: I will NOT BE ABLE TO ANSWER MESSAGES sent here, apologies
